Commentary

Miyamoto Musashi (1584-1645) legendary master of sword, which after carrier of famous warrior and fencing teacher went to the mountains to spend his lasting time in meditation and contemplation as an ascetic. In this mountain solitude in the year 1645 he has written the essays like “handbook of strategy”, by the way it is said to be prescribed as obligatory reading of Japanese managers, which in Japanese literature is known under the name Gorin no sho, The Book of the Five Rings

Composition of the same name has, similarly as the work of Musashi, 5 distinctively separated parts, every lasting 108 seconds. Those are the Book of the Earth, Water, Fire, Wind and Emptiness, all based at authentic recordings made by the author in Japanese temples Teryanji, Shuzenji, Rogenji, in front of the Asahidaki waterfall, with the “voices” of Japanese nature, birds, cicadas semi, even the wood worms.

The music structures are build up as a combination of real and, in the sound studio, remade sounds with a few ascetic phrases played in the spirit of ichi on Jobutsu - the one tone Buddhahood principle on the traditional Japanese bamboo flute shakuhachi.
